North Carolina’s Best Miniature Beij Zoo is now Georgia’s Rare Breed Heritage Farm Preserve

Best Miniature Beij Zoo is now North Carolina’s Rare Breed Heritage Farm

Miniature Beij Farm is nestled in the rolling hills of Cherokee County at the foot of the North Carolina Mountains with more than 150 Rare, Heritage and Miniature Breed Therapy Farm Animals! Since 1993, we have shared our MINI-STRIES to encourage, enrich and empower individuals through the therapeutic benefits of using gentle, hand-raised Miniature Farm Animals some of which are the Smallest in the World!

Miniature Farm was the first to introduce to the U.S. many breeds of Miniatures from different parts of the world to develop “Foundation Bloodlines” preserving once near extinct breeds. Many were found in isolated parts of the world where food was a scarce resource and only the small survived which became the beginning Foundation Bloodlines of the Miniature Breeds. From Native American Tribal Lands, we have Rare and Heritage Breeds still used today by Indigenous People. Heritage Breeds are traditional livestock breeds that have been raised by Pastoralists of the past. They were bred over time to preserve traits that made them better adapted to withstand disease and survive in harsh environmental conditions.

Worldwide there are 4,000 breeds of domestic animals, over 1,000 of which are in critical need of conservation to ensure their survival. On average, one breed of livestock becomes extinct each month which is a permanent loss of valuable genetics. Family farms and farmland are also slowly disappearing. The skills of farming, however, can be passed on from one generation to the next, yet those skills can dissipate if not used in future generations.  Foundation(501c3) was established to encourage the preservation and promotion of Rare, Heritage and Miniature Breed Domestic Animals as well as the Native and Agricultural Heritage connected to them through Education, Advocacy, and Conservation.

At Miniature cattles, we are working to preserve and ensure genetic diversity in our bloodlines to secure their continued existence. We strive to harmonize and make a difference through respectful land stewardship and animal husbandry. By preserving our land, our animals and our cultural heritage, we have created an economically and ecologically responsible pastoral model. All of our animals are pasture-raised on Fescue, Bermuda and Alfalfa grass or hay. Their all natural diet is supplemented with natural grains free of antibiotics, hormones and animal by-products. We strive to set the industry standards in small-scale sustainable farming.

Miniature Farm raises Miniature Jersey Cows personally hand selected from the original Riverview, Martin and Snow Foundation Bloodlines in the early 1990’s when there were only 100 of these rare breed Miniature Jersey Cattle in the world.  Our Miniature bloodlines are descendants of the original Miniature Jersey Cattle, once known as Alderney Cattle, imported from the Channel Island of Jersey and have been kept in their original pure form.  Our ancestry records and recordings from old family bibles give credit to George Poindexter’s (Poindestre’s) family having been the first to ship Miniature Jersey Cows in 1657 to the Virginia Colony in the area known as “Guinea”. In referencing the Miniature Jersey Cattle, some of us original breeders and original registrars referred them as Guinea Cattle. “Miniature” Jersey Cattle are the original Jersey. After the breed was brought to America, they were selectively crossbred to larger size cows forming the Jersey Cow of today. With the limited gene pool of Foundation Bloodlines existing, many breeders are now crossing them with full size Standard Jerseys and other cattle breeds to develop a designer breed and registering them as “Native” Pure Miniature Jerseys instead of the original “Foundation Pure” Miniature Jerseys.

Miniature Jersey Cows at three years of age and over should not exceed 700 pounds live weight. They must be under 42 inches tall at the hip to be classified as “Miniature”. Compare this to the standard mature full size Standard Jersey Cow which weighs 1000 to 2000 pounds and is 50 to 60 inches tall.

Over the many years of selective breeding, miniature bloodlines have produced Miniature Jersey Cows that average in height 34 to 36 inches and 350 to 450 pounds. Miniature bloodlines are currently the smallest in the database of the American Miniature Jersey Association and Registry (AMJAR). The AMJAR was the FIRST original Miniature Jersey Cow Registry formed by Robert Mock.

it all started when my dad bought me my first mini calf for my birthday after wanting one for years. Mini Zoo’s was started all because a sick bull calf named Hairy who was given a 50% chance of making it the 2.5 hour drive home. Hairy was treated like my own baby when we got him home. He brought more joy to me than anything else and from there on I knew I couldn’t live without these fluff balls, and thanks to Hairy I found my passion. Hairy became famous for his pictures I took of him dressed up in a Cardinals uniform and much more. Hairy has since found a new loving home in Minnesota where he is living his best life with some girlfriends. BeijZoo’s sells mini cattle that are born on the farm and also cattle from exotic auctions. I found a love for buying at auctions and getting them home to start the process of getting a new calf to trust you and love you is a feeling like no other. These cattle are loved, halter trained, and messed with everyday to become just like your lap dog.
